Public Safety, Weather & Traffic Updates
Burn ban in effect in Cass County, Indiana through Nov. 5, 2024

Due to dry conditions, a burn ban was enacted on Oct. 7, 2024 and bans the following activities in Cass County until November 5, 2024:

  1. Campfires.
  2. Bonfires.
  3. Unpermitted controlled burns.
  4. Burning of yard and household trash.
  5. Burning of construction debris.
  6. Burning of organic debris.
  7. Discarding extinguished smoking materials of any kind on the ground or not within an enclosed fireproof receptacle.
  8. Non-commercial burning of material which is not contained in a barbecue grill, with a lid which is only opened periodically and constantly attended.
  9. The burning of any other open-air fires.
  10. Fireworks of any kind, except fireworks displays by an entity having a permit issued by the Office of the Indiana State Fire Marshall or displays sponsored by a Cass County municipality and supervised by a local fire department.

State Road 16 to close west of Royal Center on or after October 1, 2024 through end of October

State Road 16 between CR 1050W and 900W will be closed beginning on or after Tuesday, Oct. 1 through the end of October 2024 for a bridge deck overlay preventative maintenance project at Kennel Ditch. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow State Road 119 and U.S. 35.

West Northern Avenue in Logansport will be closed to thru traffic starting Tuesday, September 24, 2024 from the Royal Center Pike to Highway 17/ North 3rd Street as Logansport Utilities’ steel pole installations begin. Beginning at 8 a.m. daily, LU’s contractor Hoosier Edison Line Company will begin the first phase of steel pole installations, closing West Northern Avenue due to safety precautions for crews. Local traffic will be allowed access. Work will continue daily for several weeks.

Water hydrants in Logansport to be flushed overnight for several weeks

Logansport Utilities (LU) will be flushing water hydrants for the next four to six weeks to improve water quality, the health of the water system, and ensure hydrants are operational and in good working order.

To minimize inconvenience LU will be flushing areas of the water system overnight Monday through Friday between 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.

Construction on East Broadway (The Boulevard) in Logansport

NIPSCO has an ongoing project on the Boulevard (East Broadway between 26th Street and Cass Plaza Drive / Spencer Park) in Logansport. We don’t receive notifications from them on the daily schedule for this project, but be prepared for closures in the area and plan accordingly.

State Road 18 to close west of Galveston on or after Aug. 7 through mid-October 2024

State Road 18 west of Galveston will be closed through mid-October for a small structure replacement at Dehaven Ditch (between CR 400E and 500E). Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow State Road 218/29, State Road 219 and U.S. 35.

Light Up Logansport Parade sign-up forms due Oct. 25, 2024

Sign-ups are underway for Light Up Logansport Parade 2024, hosted by the City of Logansport with support from Iron Horse Broadcasting! This year the parade will be on Friday, November 29 @ 6:00 p.m. in Downtown Logansport.

Sign up forms for parade participants and vendors can be picked up in the Mayor’s Office or printed from the Light Up Logansport Facebook page.

Election Day is Nov. 5, 2024. We’ve put together a list of the offices on the ballots, as well as voting times and locations. Here are some additional upcoming dates:

10/7: Deadline to register to vote. Check your voting status or register at https://indianavoters.in.gov/

10/8: Early in-person voting begins.

10/22: Candidate Debate at McHale Performing Arts Center

10/24: Vote by Mail Application Deadline: October 24, 2024 at 11:59 PM (local prevailing time)

10/24: The Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian candidates for Indiana governor have agreed to meet Oct. 24 in a televised debate organized by the Indiana Debate Commission. The debate among Mike Braun (R), Jennifer McCormick (D), and Donald Rainwater (L) will be broadcast live at 7-8 p.m. EDT from the WFYI public television station in Indianapolis. Commission member Laura Merrifield Wilson, a political science professor and host of WICR radio’s “Positively Politics,” will moderate the debate. The debate will also be livestreamed on the Commission’s website at www.indianadebatecommission.com.

MILITARY ASSISTANCE

The Military Family Relief fund offers emergency grants for veterans and their dependent family members experiencing financial hardship. To see if you qualify visit in.gov/dva.

UTILITY ASSISTANCE

  • NIPSCO encourages income-eligible customers struggling to pay their gas utility bill to apply for additional energy assistance programs available December 1 through May 31. Programs such as NIPSCO Hardship, SERV (Supply Energy Resources to Veterans) and SILVER (Seniors in Indiana Low-Income and Vulnerable Energy Resource) offer a one-time benefit of up to $400 per year to those who qualify. | More info
