INDIANAPOLIS – The 500 Festival, a nonprofit organization providing life-enriching events and programs celebrating the legacy of the Indianapolis 500, today revealed the finisher’s medals for the 2016 One America 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and the Finish Line 500 Festival 5K. 2016 is a monumental year for the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, marking the 40th running of the Mini-Marathon and the 100th running of the Indy 500. To celebrate these historic milestones, the medals for the Mini-Marathon and the 5K pay homage to the iconic traditions of the greatest spectacle in motor racing.
Finishers of the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon will receive a rescaled replica of the highly coveted Borg-Warner trophy, which is presented to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 each year. Because it bears a striking resemblance to one of the most storied trophies in sports, this year’s Mini-Marathon medal has bulked up in size and weight. It measures 5.75 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide, and the weight of the medal is nearly twice weighs in at a substantial 175 grams. The Finish Line 500 Festival 5K medal compliments the Mini-Marathon medal and emulates the wreath which is traditionally presented to the winner of the Indianapolis 500.
“Participants in the 2016 One America Festival Mini Marathon will have a unique connection to two historic events – the 40th running of the Mini-Marathon and the 100th running of the Indy 500,” said Bob Bryant, president and CEO, 500 Festival. “Memories of these occasions will last forever, and this medal was purposefully designed to commemorate these events and serve as a reminder for participants of their involvement during this extraordinary time.”
The Indy Mini is the 500 Festival’s largest fundraiser. Race registrations help support the 500 estival’s free youth programs and events. By getting nearly 40,000 moving, the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and Finish Line 500 Festival 5K have become the state’s largest health initiatives, helping Hoosiers get focused on their health and well-being. The course for the Mini-Marathon is flat and fast and appeals to runners and walkers alike. It begins near the intersection of Washington and West Streets in downtown Indianapolis, heads west toward the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and includes a lap around the famed 2.5 mile track before heading back downtown to the finish line at Military Park.
