secretgardenThis weekend, Indiana University Kokomo music and theater students will present their rendition of Lucy Simon’s musical The Secret Garden.

Music professor, Wendy Grice, will direct the show along with communications professor, Joann Kaiser.

Presenting a musical for the first time with an all student cast, Grice says that the performance will be one to remember.

“Having so many students with musical experience has been a blessing for this production,” said Grice. “The music is comparable to any other professional performance.”

Based on the famous novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the drama follows a young girl who is left orphaned after her parents perish from a cholera outbreak in India. Now living with her closed-off uncle and cousin in England, she is determined to bring life back to a hidden away garden and also to her family.

For many students in the cast this production will be their first time acting in a stage performance.

Freshman Haleigh Hutsell, performing and singing as a chorus member, says that acting has been an entirely different experience for her.

“This performance has required me to do a lot of improvising in order to learn stage direction,” she said. “I’m so grateful to be in it with such an amazing and supportive group of people.”

Performances for The Secret Garden will be Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. All will be held in Kresge Auditorium.

Admission is $10 per person, or $5 with a student ID. Seating will be first come-first serve.
