Little, Junior & Teen Miss Cass County contestants collect donations for the troops

Last Updated on July 6, 2016 by cassnetwork

This year’s competitors for Little Miss, Junior Miss and Teen Miss Cass County participated in a community service workshop today at the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds.

At the suggestion of Little Miss Cass County 2015, Mandee Weisenburger, the girls collected items to help Logansport’s Twin Rivers Blue Star Mothers Chapter 11 fill care packages to send to troops serving overseas.

This morning, the girls and their family members unloaded boxes full of donations from their cars and stacked them inside the 4-H Community Center. As Lynnsey Bell, who coordinates the competition, addressed the girls, four members of the Twin Rivers Blue Star Mothers chapter set up tables and began unpacking the boxes.

Blue Star Mothers president Kimberly Clark was overwhelmed by the support. Normally, the group holds three fundraising drives per year. She told the girls they had collected enough with this event to complete all  of the group’s mailings for the year.

The boxes contain items like shampoo, razors, sunscreen, candy and gum that aren’t always available or easily accessible for soldiers serving overseas. According to Clark, another popular item is plastic shower curtains that can be used for privacy.

Today, the girls involved in the Little, Junior and Teen Miss Cass County program participated in three service projects, including visiting residents at Woodbridge Health Campus, assisting with projects at the fairgrounds, and helping to pack the boxes for the Blue Star Mothers.

The Blue Star Mothers rely on local families to share addresses of local service members who might like to receive a care package, and also welcome donations for postage, as the cost to ship each box is just under $20. The Blue Star Mothers are also seeking corporate sponsors to assist with their efforts. Contact Kimberly Clark, president, at 859-907-9387 or e-mail her at kimberlyclark1959@hotmail.com. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 432, Logansport, IN 47926.

The Little, Junior and Teen Miss Cass County contestants will participate in the Miss Cass County Pageant on Sunday, July 10 at the Cass County 4-H Fairgrounds.
