Last Updated on August 26, 2016 by cassnetwork

Cass County seniors will have four more opportunities for scholarships in 2017 through the Community Foundation. The new awards have been established by the families in memory and honor of loved ones. Three new scholarships will be awarded the first time in 2017. They are the “Lisa E. Arnett Memorial Scholarship”, the “Charlie Hamm Memorial Scholarship” and the “Cara D. Chambers-Stienbarger Memorial Scholarship”. The “Tom Helms Memorial 4H Fund” also established this year was awarded for the first time at the Cass County 4H Fair last month.

The Lisa E. Arnett Scholarship was established by Lisa’s siblings to honor her memory as an outstanding teacher. Lisa was passionate about teaching and her students. She spent many years teaching at All Saints Catholic School before assuming a teaching position at Lincoln Middle School. The annual award will be presented to a graduating senior from Logansport High School who best answers the question, “Lisa led a life that made a difference to not only her students but also her community. If you receive this award, how would you carry on her legacy?”

Charlie Hamm

The Charlie Hamm Memorial Scholarship was established by his wife, Marsha to honor his lifetime love of golf. Marsha said, “I decided to start the Charles R Hamm Memorial Scholarship Fund on the advice of Suzie Timmons Oliver and Michael Timmons, two of Charlie’s dear friends. Charlie was an avid golfer. He spent most of his childhood and early adult life at Dykeman Golf Course and was on the LHS golf team throughout his high school years.” The scholarship will be awarded to an LHS senior who has been a member of the high school golf team, has a 2.5 GPA and plans to attend a two or four institution.

Marsha shared, “Golf provided Charlie the opportunity to do something he loved and brought him much joy and created friendships throughout his life. The company Charlie worked for, Pearl Abrasive, gave the first donation to commemorate Charlie, and we went from that, to where we are now with an endowed scholarship. I’m honored to be a part of a scholarship that will help an LHS senior golfer with their college efforts, and I know Charlie is also very honored and very proud.

Cara Chambers-Stienbarger

The Cara D. Chambers-Stienbarger Memorial Scholarship was established by her family to honor Cara’s life and assist another female student who wishes to attend Purdue University. Cara graduated from Logansport High School in 1992 and from Purdue University in 1996, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. The scholarship will be available to Logansport High School female students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and submit an essay on one of two topics: “How has your family background affected how you see the world?” or “Why have you chosen your intended major?”

The Tom Helms Memorial 4H Scholarship was also established by his family to honor his memory and his work with the local Cass County 4H Association. Tom was a lifelong farmer and had also worked for the Cass County Highway Dept. He served on the Board of Directors for the Walton Elevator and was a member of the Carroll, Cass, and Rock Creek Conservancy. Tom loved fishing, hunting, gardening and most of all, spending time with his family. Tom had also served his county in the National Guard. The scholarship will be awarded annually at the Cass County 4H Fair to a 10-year member of 4H who best answers the question: “How has your 4H experience impacted your life and career decisions?”

Each scholarship has other criteria established by donor and the amount of the awards will vary. Students will receive application information about these and other scholarships held by CCCF during November 2016. Applications are typically due at the CCCF office in late January.

In 2016, CCCF awarded 119 scholarships totaling over $265,000. For more information on these scholarships or how to establish your own scholarship, please call the Cass County Community Foundation at 574-722-2200.
