INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — As Hurricane Matthew affects the southeast coast of the United States, the American Red Cross is on the ground helping people who are affected by this life-threatening storm. So far, 21 Hoosiers have deployed to Florida and South Carolina from Indiana to help, and the Indiana Red Cross is seeking additional volunteers to support the need.
Those interested in helping support Hurricane Matthew relief efforts can do so in the following ways:
Volunteer: Visit the newly opened Volunteer Intake Center in Indianapolis at the Red Cross Regional Headquarters (1510 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202), where you can get trained immediately and be deployed to areas that have been hit hard by Hurricane Matthew. If you do not reside close to Indianapolis, simply call: 317-684-1441, and a member of the deployment team will refer you to your closest volunteer training site.
The hours in Indianapolis for volunteer training are: Monday – Friday – 9a.m. – 7p.m. and Saturday – Sunday – 10a.m. – 5 p.m.
Make a financial donation: Make a donation to the Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small across the United States. Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Give blood: The storm has forced the cancellation of dozens of blood drives resulting in more than 1,300 blood donations unable to be collected. We strongly encourage eligible donors in parts of the country unaffected by the storm to please give blood or platelets to help ensure we have a readily available blood supply for patients in need. Even before the threat of Hurricane Matthew, there was an urgent need for donors of all blood types, especially type O. Appointments can be made by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
