The first North Central Conference championship for Logansport basketball in 40 years has spurred a proclamation.

Mayor Dave Kitchell has proclaimed the week of Feb. 12 “Championship Week” in Logansport. He is asking all Logansport area businesses and industries with reader boards on outdoor signs to congratulate the Logansport Berries and Coach Pat Skaggs who are now 8-0 in the conference and 21-1 overall after defeating Richmond Saturday night.

“This is a rarity for our community, and this is an exceptional group of young men we’re honored to have representing us throughout the state, including the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle,” Kitchell said. “Whether we attend every game or casually read the scores or listen to the games from a distance, we all need to recognize this group of people for accomplishing a rare feat.”

Logansport had only won or shared previous conference titles in 1927, 1933, 1934 and 1977. The Berries can win the NCC title outright Friday in the Berry Bowl with a win over the only remaining conference foe, Indianapolis Tech. It will be senior night.

Next week, the Berries will begin play in the IHSAA Sectional. The Berries have defeated most of the teams in the sectional and will host the regional round the following week.
