A man who grew up in Logansport and never lost a growing fascination with the area’s history and the former Wabash & Erie Canal is the latest recipient of a city honor.
Tom Castaldi, the first board president of the Indiana State Museum Foundation Board and a former state museum board member, is this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.
Castaldi currently is a member of the Allen County/Fort Wayne Historical Society Board, the Canal Society of Indiana Board and the Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor Board.
“Tom in many respects is a walking encyclopedia of Indiana history,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today in making the announcement. “He was the person who tracked down one interesting fact about Logansport – it was a place that Abraham Lincoln once visited via train.”
Castaldi has contributed to or written nine books. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1994 and received the Indiana Historical Society’s Eli Lilly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
Kitchell said Castaldi’s love of his hometown continues with his work in the restoration of a cemetery in Huston Park. The Castaldi Family Trust, in conjunction with the Logansport Parks and Recreation Department, is restoring a cemetery where a general from Cass County is buried.
The Citizen of the Week Award is presented on an ongoing basis to recognize local residents and natives for their work or volunteerism.
