Collins named “Citizen of the Week”

A local woman who has raised thousands of dollars for a Christmas benefit is recognized this week as Logansport’s Citizen of the Week.

Lora Collins is a familiar face on the west side of Logansport in recent years. Through a memorial fund-raiser for the late Jamie Melroy, she and organizers have generated $18,000 in charitable contributions which benefit the local “Shop with a Cop” program during the holidays.

Saturday, Collins and others will be back at the Neighborhood Tavern on Wilkinson Street again where music and festivities will raise what they hope will be $8,000 for the program.

“Logansport has people like Lora who step up because they are inspired by situations that resonate with them,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “In her case, Jamie’s passing and the loss of a father to five children led her to do something proactive to help people from throughout our community and make the holiday season brighter for all of us. That’s the true spirit of Christmas, and the definition of communities is – people caring about each other, or being our brother’s keeper.”

Collins will receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant and a certificate from the Mayor’s Office. The Citizen of the Week Award is presented on an ongoing basis to recognize local residents and natives for their work or volunteerism.
