KOKOMO, Ind. — As part of its 2017 commencement ceremony May 12, Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region will recognize a number of graduating students, as well as one student organization, for leadership and outstanding contributions at the College.
The Student Excellence in Volunteerism Award, which goes to one student in each Ivy Tech region each year and includes a $500 scholarship, was presented to Moriah Mercer of Peru, who is graduating with an Associate of Science in Human Services.
Mercer has been active both on campus and in the community. Through her involvement with Phi Theta Kappa and the Human Services Student Organization, she has volunteered with the Relay for Life in two counties, worked with the Kokomo Rescue Mission, and celebrated Valentine’s Day with the residents of Wellbrooke of Kokomo. Mercer also served as a student coordinator for the 2017 annual Ivy Tech Days of Service in the Kokomo region. In addition, she serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer in Miami County.
Graduating students to be honored for their completion of Ivy Tech’s Student Leadership Academy include Anastasia A. Evers, Matthew Nelson, and Lucia Floridalma Ponce, all of Logansport; Cynthia M. Dulin, James Earl Montgomery, and Amber R. Zehringer, all of Kokomo; Melody Ann Anderson, Cordelia Marie Cole, and Rafael Antonio Molina, all of Peru; and Benny R. Hillis of West Middleton.
The Student Organization Service Project Award, presented each year to one registered student organization in each Ivy Tech region along with $500 to support its activities, went to the Alpha Phi Pi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa on the Kokomo Campus. The award recognized members’ efforts to help smooth the process for veteran students accessing Disability Support Services in the Kokomo Region. The students used information compiled through their research to develop a recommendation for changing related Ivy Tech policies. They were able to present the recommendation at a statewide meeting of administrators, meaning this Kokomo-student-led initiative may have statewide impact in better serving student veterans.
