Spring ushers in a time of appreciating nature in Indiana, and no one may appreciate it more than the man who was instrumental in starting an outdoor education area for local schools.
David LaPierre, a retired life sciences teacher, was the driving force behind The Berry Patch, an area south of Logansport High School that has been a spring and fall respite for students and a way to incorporate natural areas into the Logansport High School campus.
“As a science and biology teacher, Dave LaPierre found ways to incorporate teaching in an outdoor classroom in a way that makes what might have been an unused area into functional use without disturbing the natural habitat,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today in proclaiming him The Citizen of the Week.
“We’re fortunate to have such a dedicated teacher who not only made this a pet project as a paid employee of Logansport schools, but as a retiree who dedicated much of his free time to ensuring that students he would never teach would learn from his investments of time, foresight and labor.”
LaPierre is a graduate of Valparaiso University and Purdue University. He and his wife, Nancy, reside on Logansport’s south side.
The Citizen of the Week Award is presented on an ongoing basis to recognize local residents and natives for their work or volunteerism.
