Indiana UnemploymentThe combination of a strong economy and a diverse local economic base are contributing to some of the best conditions for workers in years, Mayor Dave Kitchell said today.

A report in today’s Logansport Pharos-Tribune that indicates unemployment is continuing to fall and now has reached the lowest level in the city in 17 years.

“We’re not surprised by the news, and we expect the trend to continue as seasonal employment opportunities during the summer absorb even more workers,” Kitchell said. “My main concerns now are focused on the employees who will be losing jobs at J.C. Penney and Marsh supermarkets, the downsizing of the labor market and the housing stock we’re going to need to attract more workers. We simply need to attract more people who want to work.”

As reported in the Pharos-Tribune, the local unemployment rate is below the national level and continues to be at or near the state level, and the level of surrounding counties.

The mayor said the unemployment rate is good news for displaced workers and graduating high school and college seniors who are looking for jobs.
