A Marine veteran who served as grand marshal in the annual Memorial Day Observance in Logansport has been recognized with a special city honor.

Elmer Wood has been named Citizen of the Week by Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell. Wood, who served during World War II, was on hand for ceremonies at the City Building Monday and placed a wreath at the Civil War Monument at Mount Hope Cemetery. In addition to serving in the Pacific during World World War II, he also served in the Reserves during the Korean Conflict.

Many generations have known him as the official scorekeeper for Logansport High School athletic events. He served as the scorekeeper for Logansport during the Berries’ first game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“We’re fortunate to have Elmer and people like him who not only served our country in times of war, but support high school athletics for decades, long after their own children are grown,” said Kitchell. “Having known Elmer for years, I know he as a genuine passion for Logansport and Logansport High School.”

The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
