A Logansport man who founded a fund-raising golf tournament in memory of his father is the latest recipient of a special city award.

Brad Darche founded the Harvey Darche Memorial Golf Tournament. Through his efforts, the tournament has raised money for charitable purposes.

“The Bible teaches people to honor their father and mother, and what Brad does with this tournament is not only honor his father, but gives back to the community. He pays the bill for charity forward and meets needs that may not otherwise be met,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “We find charitable people many places, but in the summer, a number of charitable events like Brad’s are held on golf courses. We’re glad our local course is used for many of those events, including the recent Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation outing.”

Kitchell said Darche is known for his community spirit that was perhaps best displayed in 1979 when Logansport played Evansville Memorial for the state baseball championship. Although Evansville had won 59 games in a row, Darche attended the game holding a sign that read “59-1.” The Berries went on to defeat Evansville 6-5 in extra innings to win the school’s third state baseball championship and end one of the longest sports winning streaks in Indiana history.

Darche also was a player on the “Dentzel Dream Team” in 1995 that scrimmages the Indiana Lottery’s traveling team and raised thousands for the Dentzel carousel restoration.

“These anecdotes reflect the love Brad has for Logansport and the can-do spirit that sets Logansport apart from many other places,” Kitchell said.

The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
