A Logansport woman who has lived in Florida and Arizona but came to Logansport because of its historic architecture will serve on the Logansport Historic Preservation Commission.

Tia Justice, a wife and mother of three, will succeed Dr. Valerie McCray on the board. Dr. McCray, who practices at Logansport State Hospital, has relocated outside the city.

Justice and her husband are restoring a home in the 700 block of East Market Street.

Mayor Dave Kitchell also has announced that Mark Bender has been reappointed to the Logansport Utility Service Board. Bender was appointed last year to fill out an unexpired term. He is one of three mayoral appointments on the board. The other two are Mike Laird and Mike Meagher. His term will expire in 2021.

“I’m grateful that both people have agreed to serve in these capacities,” Kitchell said. “In Tia, we have someone who is in her 30s, yet is passionate about historic preservation. She is a testament to what historic preservation means to some people who will move to a community to take on preservation projects. We need more people to follow her example.”

Kitchell also thanked Dr. McCray, who owns a home on Bankers Row, for her involvement. “It’s very possible she’ll be back in Logansport in the near future and we hope she returns.”

In Bender, Kitchell said the city has someone who has previous experience on the stormwater management board and in manufacturing.

“Mark has probably asked as many questions as any USB member since he’s been appointed,” Kitchell said. “He’s been part of some good discussions about the status of our utilities and the future of LMU.”
