Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Capital Campaign gains momentum

Last Updated on July 19, 2017 by cassnetwork

The Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation has embarked on a capital campaign in 2017 to raise funds and garner community support for one of the largest capital improvement projects in the hospital’s history. The “Building for Generations” campaign has been well-received by many local businesses and significant individual donors. City and county officials recently pledged their support as well, providing economic development funding that will assist the project through to completion. The campaign has gained momentum from the significant gifts that have already been pledged, and now turns its focus toward including the larger Cass County community.

The Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation serves as the fundraising arm of Logansport Memorial Hospital. For over 30 years, the Foundation has held an annual golf tournament during the summer that has raised substantial funds for various hospital growth initiatives. For the last ten years, the annual River Bluff Run has been held to celebrate breast cancer awareness, and raise funds to provide mammograms for Cass County women. The Foundation was also responsible for the fundraising that produced the River Bluff Trail and Hervey Preserve in 2004, raising $500,000 for both public trails that are widely used and appreciated today as community assets.

Each year, the Foundation calls on hospital employees and the Cass County community to donate in support of the diverse projects and services that are sustained and maintained by its fundraising. Now, the Foundation has stepped into its largest fundraising role to date, as it seeks to raise $750,000 to contribute toward the $7.4 million project that will construct a new cancer care center and renovate the existing LMH obstetrics unit.

“We are focused on improving and expanding our community hospital, with specific attention to incorporating modernized designs and state-of-the-art equipment to create the best possible experience for our patients,” comments Perry Gay, President and CEO of Logansport Memorial Hospital. “This project will also provide a streamlined, more effective environment for the physicians and employees who are delivering care in these areas, for our patients at our high standards. I am so grateful to the businesses, individuals, physicians, hospital employees, and community officials who have seen our vision, and embraced it with us by already giving generously to this campaign. I am hopeful that we have other individuals and families in the community who will feel inclined to also contribute to our efforts and show their support for our hospital. We pursue growth initiatives like this, with more to come over the next few years, so that we can provide the care our community needs close to home and help our patients reach the best possible health outcomes.”

“We are so pleased with the support we’ve received thus far,” echoes Vicki Byrd, Vice-President of Planning and Development for Logansport Memorial Hospital, and Director of the Logansport Memorial Hospital Foundation. “We want to make sure that the larger community is becoming aware of our efforts, and knows how to contribute if they wish to do so. Patients and visitors to the hospital may start to see some information about the campaign, with a banner in the hospital lobby and slides on the TV screen presentations in our lobby and cafeteria. Our hospital employees have purchased t-shirts with designs on them that show this is about ‘more than bricks’ for our organization. You may notice these t-shirts in purple and gray colors starting to be worn around the hospital and out in the community. We plan to make presentations to various community organizations as well so that they may consider how they can be involved in contributing to our cause.”

Several community members have served on the Foundation board of directors and have played an integral part in helping to position the campaign for the success it has had. The focus areas for this campaign – cancer care and maternity care – are two necessary service lines for our community, as proven by the data gathered and shown in the recent 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment. “Part of our ongoing commitment to the community is to provide care that our patients need,” explains Perry Gay. “It’s not effective to bring service lines to the community that may not be successful. With this project, we are taking two existing service lines that our patients already utilize, and improving the facility space where they are located. The new cancer care center will make it more convenient to access cancer care services, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, all in one location. The same physicians that patients currently know and trust, based out of Indianapolis, will still be providing care in this new location. But they will be able to collaborate more closely in treating a patient through every part of their cancer journey, and being connected to the other services needed on-site at the hospital will be better for the patients as well.”

Perry goes on to comment about the current obstetrics unit, noting the need it serves for growing families in Cass County. “Our OB/GYNs and obstetrics nursing staff are an exceptional team, and together, they are part of what can be one of the greatest experiences in a family,” he says. “But the needs of families have changed over time, as everything often does, and our current unit has not kept pace with those changes. The updates we plan to make will modernize the unit and our birthing experience so that it not only meets, but exceeds patient expectations for quality, privacy, and specialized care.”
