We’ve invited Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell to share information from the city in a monthly update on CassCountyOnline.com.

Logansport has long been known as “the City of Bridges” and some years it is more apparent than others.

This is going to be one of those years because two construction projects will affect traffic flow through the city as the spring of 2018 ushers in a new construction season.

Beginning today, the 18th Street Bridge is closed to thru traffic. It will take approximately six months to not only make needed repairs to the bridge, but to add lighting and railing that will make it safer for motorists and pedestrians.  This bridge over the Wabash is heavily traveled and is one of the best shortcuts from the east end to U.S. 24 and 35. The work will be completed in six months. City and county officials have been working together on this project. While we could not allow traffic to be maintained on the bridge during construction, much of the work will be done during the summer which will minimize the impact of school-related traffic to Logansport High School and its surrounding campus. Meanwhile, other north/south roads such as Burlington Avenue and Cass County Road 600E will likely have heavier than normal traffic.

Next month, the Market Street Bridge project will begin with bidding, and construction is projected to begin later this year. While this is not a city project, it will impact traffic flow and direct access to the west side. Work on the approaches and West Market Street also will be completed.

This spring also is expected to usher in changes I requested to improve safety just north of the city at the intersection of Ind. 17 and 200N. I, along with several Cass County residents, asked the Indiana Department of Transportation to make changes to the intersection in light of several major accidents. One of those involved the late Betsy Tiongson.  INDOT has agreed to improve signage to prevent further tragedies there.

In the coming weeks, Logansport residents will likely see the first new Logansport Fire Department ambulance. Finishing touches are being made to it now.

Golfers at Dykeman Municipal will notice new carts available. For the first time, they’ll be able to recharge their cellular phones in their golf cart.

When the ground finally dries out from our recent rains, look for LMU crews to finishing installation of the new LED lighting on the boulevard.

Although I and many others were disappointed last month to learn that the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority did not fund our ReVere Homes housing project, we’re confident a housing master plan the city council is moving forward with can solve that problem and others.

Finally, I was proud to be part of the process for Ken Fraza’s Tony Award nomination. It’s well-deserved after his 42-year career.

It is an honor to serve you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at dkitchell@cityoflogansport.org or (574) 753-2551.
