KOKOMO, Ind. — The Indiana University Board of Trustees today approved a Student Activities and Event Center for IU Kokomo – the campus’s first new building in more than 15 years.
“The campus is excited about the new Student Activities and Events Center. It will continue the momentum of growth on the campus and provide a vehicle for community building among our students, faculty, and staff,” said Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke.
Project approval was granted for construction of a new, approximately 26,000-gross square foot Student Activities and Events Center, to be located next to the Pavillion on the east side of campus. This project will provide an indoor, on-campus facility capable of hosting large groups for university events, as well as health, wellness, physical education, recreation, and athletics activities. Architectural designs will be presented for approval at a later meeting. Anticipated opening is fall of 2020.
“This facility will provide wonderful opportunities for student convocations and other co-curricular activities, athletic events, and large gatherings of middle school and high school students who come to visit campus,” Sciame-Giesecke said. “We know that this facility will become a central gathering place for students, faculty, staff and members of the communities we serve.”
More details will come later, including renderings of the building. A capital campaign will be announced at that time.
The project now awaits final approval from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the State Budget Committee.
