LCSC announces 2018 Crystal Berry recipients

Last Updated on May 24, 2018 by cassnetwork

There are so many Logansport Community School Corporation teachers going above and beyond for students. LCSC is home to many outstanding educators who work countless hours to ensure their students’ success.  The LCSC Crystal Berry Award seeks to acknowledge one of those very special teachers each year.

Nominations were accepted in each building, and the 2018 winner of the Crystal Berry, Ms. Kathy Bahnaman!

Ms. Bahnaman has been an LCSC teacher for an impressive 37 years. She taught step-up for 14 years, with the other 36 in the Kindergarten classroom. Her first year was at Franklin, but Columbia Elementary School has been her home for the past 36 years.

Ms. Bahnaman’s nomination states:

Ms. Kathy Bahnaman is truly a blessing to all the students, families, staff, and stakeholders who know her at CES and LCSC. First, Kathy always puts children’s needs at the forefront of every decision she makes. More often than not, this means going the extra mile or completing extra work, but children always come first for this true leader. Ms. Bahnaman stays very active not only at Columbia Elementary School, but also for the whole corporation. She is willing to serve on extra committees and devotes her time and talent to support curriculum, students, and families. In addition, Ms. Bahnaman always looks for ways to lift others up. This could be through the social committee at CES, a friendly chat in the hallway to collaborate, or providing opportunities for future teachers to observe or open her classroom up to student teachers.

Logansport Community School would also not be complete without the tireless efforts of our dedicated support staff. From bus drivers to cafeteria staff, every position within LCSC is critical to ensure our students’ success. An LCSC Crystal Berry Award is given to acknowledge one of those very special staff members each year.

Nominations were accepted in each building, and the 2018 winner of the Crystal Berry for Support Staff is Mrs. Sheila Laing!

Mrs. Laing began her career as an instructional assistant 40 years ago at Jefferson Elementary School. Since then she has worked at several other area preschools, including the former All Saints preschool. She is now the instructional assistant for Berry Preschool at Columbia Elementary.

Mrs. Laings’s nomination states, “She has always gone above and beyond for her students. She has driven students to summer school, paid the minibus so students could get to school on time, and even tutors adults who are learning to read. She is extremely humble and does many things for our students without anyone knowing. At age 80, Mrs. Laing comes to school with a smile on her face every day, has energy we all envy, and has the patience of a saint! We all strive to be like her.”
