Here are five things you might want to know for Tuesday, May 15, 2018:

FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF

Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day, designated in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, and the governor has directed that flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in observance. This is also National Police Week.

CITY RECOGNIZING LOCAL EMERGENCY PERSONNEL

The City of Logansport is recognizing local firefighters, police officers and dispatchers following a house fire that occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday. A post on the city’s Facebook page yesterday indicates that there will be a more formal recognition soon, but commends emergency personnel for working together to save a citizen in a house fire and making sure the 2 firemen inside the house made it out alive as well.

WORK UNDERWAY FOR 2018 PAVING SEASON

The Logansport Street Department began milling the following areas yesterday in preparation for paving:

Water Street from North Third Street heading west just past Holland Street

Ebert Street from North Third Street (Highway 17) to the golf course entrance

Humphrey Street from Main to Dewey Street

Beginning today, access to U.S. 31 in Miami County will be restricted at the intersection of Blair Pike Road/West Division Road.  The work, which will strengthen the shoulders along U.S. 31 for an upcoming bridge rehabilitation project, is expected to last up to two weeks. Drivers will not be able to access U.S. 31 from Blair Pike/West Division roads, and drivers in U.S. 31 will not have access to turn onto Blair Pike/ Division road. The bridge project, between Blair Pike Road/West Division Road and U.S. 24, is scheduled to begin in mid- to late-June and will require the restriction of U.S. 31 down to one lane in each direction.

The contract was awarded to E&B Paving for $8.7 million and includes the asphalt resurface of U.S. 31 and additional bridge maintenance on U.S. 31 in Miami County.
