Here are five things you might want to know and five upcoming events for Friday, June 1:
RATE INCREASES TAKE EFFECT TODAY
Rates for LMU’s water, sewer and stormwater customers are set to increase today. The rate increases were approved earlier this year. Sewer rates will increase by 11.8 percent while water rates are set to increase 3.7%
The water and sewer rate increases will happen annually on June 1 through 2022.
Stormwater rates are set to increase this year and next. Residential customers had been paying $8.85 per month for stormwater. That will increase to $10.66 per month.
When the water and sewer rate increases were recommended in October, a consultant for LMU said the water department has seen a loss of revenue because of the closure of the electric generating plant, and that expenses for chemicals for the sewage department have increased considerably due to a federal mandate to remove phosphorus.
The sewer and stormwater rate increases will also include the costs of the multi-million dollar stormwater project on Melbourne Avenue set to begin later this year.
NEW PAYMENT PLANS OFFERED FOR INDIANA TAX PAYERS
The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) has instituted new payment plan options to help ease the burden to Hoosier taxpayers. The new payment plan options became effective in early May and allow individuals to establish plans for a longer period of time without the previous requirement of a down payment equal to 20 percent of the outstanding liability.
To establish a payment plan, the amount of tax due must be $100 or greater. More info can be found here.
ISDA HOLDING PHOTO CONTEST
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is now accepting submissions for the 11th annual Indiana Agriculture photo contest, which showcases the hard work and contributions made by Hoosier farmers. The contest is open to the general public, and the winners will be honored during a special ceremony at the Indiana State Fair.

“CELEBRATE LOGANSPORT” ON THURSDAY, JUNE 7
Logan’s Landing will host its annual celebration of Logansport’s birthday during the Celebrate Logansport event Thursday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Farmers Market Lot at the corner of Fourth and Market Streets. Servings of strawberry shortcake will be sold for $5.There will be free birthday cake while supplies last, along with a variety of activities and games for kids.
FARMERS MARKET OPENS THIS WEEKEND
