For 48 years, he was the arbiter of balls and strikes on Logansport diamonds from 250 to 300 times a year.

Don Lombardi, who just retired as an Indiana district vice president of the Amateur Softball Association, has been named Logansport Citizen of the Week for his dedication to amateur sports in Logansport.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said Lombardi’s dedication defines loyalty to amateur sports.

“Who can imagine how many times he said ‘Safe’ or ‘Out’ or ‘Ball’ or ‘Strike,’” Kitchell said. “It’s obvious he did it for the love of the game because umpires aren’t in it to win popularity contests.”

Lombardi grew up in a home with 18 siblings and has been employed with Engineering Aggregates for the past 40 years. He also is known for displaying positive messages on a hanging sign in front of the East Broadway home where and his wife, Barbara, reside.

The Citizen of the Week is a city program honoring Logansport natives or former residents who have made contributions to the city.
