Retired teachers and teachers who taught during the 2017-2018 school year are eligible candidates for the third annual award presented by the city of Logansport.
The award is named for the late Margaret Newby, a long-time teacher in Logansport schools. Newby retired while teaching fourth-graders at the former Longfellow Elementary School. Last year’s recipients were David Geisler and Joyce Pasel.
During World War II when male teachers at Longfellow were called to duty, Newby became the first woman to coach elementary boys sports. She was successful in winning the eight-school city championships in football, basketball and baseball. One of her particular interests was teaching Indiana history.
Nominations will be accepted through Sept. 15 at the Mayor’s Office, and may be submitted via e-mail at email@example.com.
This year’s recipients will be recognized at a public luncheon this fall.
