The National Council for Home Safety and Security has moved up Logansport’s ranking in its review of the best places to avoid crime in Indiana and nationwide.

The city has moved up from 25th to 22nd in the 2019 rankings. No city in a county surrounding Cass is above Logansport in the rankings, but Kokomo ranks 27th. Lafayette checked in at 20th though it had 14 times as many violent crimes and a crime rate more than three times the rate in Logansport which is less than half the state rate.

Only four cities ahead of Logansport in the rankings had fewer violent crimes. The city had 24 last year, in addition to 661 property crimes. The rankings are based on a formula using FBI crime statistics. Marion ranked 16th, but had four times the number of violent crimes.

It marks the fourth time in four years that Logansport has been recognized among the state’s safest cities. Backgroundcheck.org named Logansport the 10th safest cities in both 2016 and 2018.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said it is easy to take public safety for granted, but the men and women who are serving Logansport rank well among their Indiana peers.

Dyer, Carmel, St. John, Crown Point and Jasper were the five safest cities, according to the rankings.
