MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 2019: 5 things to know and 5 upcoming events

Here are five things we thought you might want to know, plus five upcoming events:

❤️ Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is a federal holiday. Post offices are closed and there’s no mail delivery. Banks and most government offices, including the Cass County Government Building, are also closed. Today is recognized as a day of service, and, a Presidential Proclamation encourages Americans “to recommit themselves to Dr. King’s dream by engaging in acts of service to others, to their community, and to our Nation.”

⚖️ In observance of the holiday, the Cass County Bar Association is sponsoring Talk To A Lawyer Day. From 9-11:30 a.m. today (1/21), anyone may call 574-753-7730 to get free advice from a local attorney. The Indiana State Bar Association began Talk To A Lawyer Days across the state to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. There’s also a statewide hotline that can be reached by calling 1-800-266-2581 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

???? The Cass County Family YMCA recently surpassed the $3 million mark in their $3.5 million capital campaign. Read more about the planned renovations at the Y here.

???? If you’re dreaming of sunny, warm locations where you could spend Spring Break, the Post Office IS continuing to provide passport services as normal during the federal government shutdown. Processing times are 4-6 weeks for routine service. More info here. (And remember, post offices are closed today in observance of MLK Day).

Purdue Extension in Cass and Miami Counties will be partnering to offer a Master Gardener Basic Training Class Feb. 6- April 24. It will be held on Wednesday mornings. More info here.
