Goal for the Bowl’ Week proclaimed as Berries contend for 2nd NCC title in 3 years

If Logansport wins its varsity boys basketball game against Indianapolis Tech Friday in the Berry Bowl, it will be an historic evening not only for the Berries, but some of their senior players.

The Berries stand on the threshold of their second basketball conference title in three years. They can secure a least a tie for the title with a win over Indianapolis Tech.

Mayor Dave Kitchell has proclaimed this “Goal for the Bowl Week” to encourage basketball fans and Logansport residents in particular to attend the game and fill the Berry Bowl with the most fans it has had for a high school basketball game this century.

“It will be Senior Night for the team, which can take on extra meaning this year,” Kitchell said. “It would be wonderful to send this class of players out in style, and honor what has been a phenomenal run for them. These players could be the only living people on the planet to say they played on two NCC boys basketball teams at Logansport.”

The only previous Logansport NCC champs to make that claim played for the 1933 and 1934 edition of the Berries. The latter won the school’s only basketball state championship. Ironically, that win came against Friday’s opponent, Indianapolis Tech. The Titans claim two conference titles and is one of six schools to have competed in the NCC to have fewer than Logansport. The others are Harrison, McCutcheon, Rochester, Lebanon and Huntington North.

If Logansport wins, it will tie the school with Frankfort for the eighth most NCC titles in boys basketball. Frankfort, a four-time state champion, has not competed in the NCC for more than 50 years.
