An active Logansport High School senior has received a significant national honor.

Lucas Pickens has been named a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarships. He now moves on in a competition with 7,500 outstanding high school students who will be eligible for $31 million in scholarship assistance.

“Lucas personifies the ultimate student who not only excels in academics, but in activities at LHS,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today in naming him the Logansport Citizen of the Week. “It’s a huge honor to be among that pool of students, and it’s another great honor for LHS.”

LHS Principal Matt Jones says the school submitted a detailed scholarship application, providing information about Pickens’ academic record and participation in school and community activities. Semifinalists must not only have an outstanding academic record, but be able to write an essay, earn qualifying SAT scores and receive the recommendation of school officials.

He is a member of the Drama Club and Thespian Society and has acted in Winter Fantasy and Straight Play productions at McHale Performing Arts Center. He has been a member of Swing Choir and All-State Choir and is a Student Rotarian. Academically, he pursues a rigorous high school schedule with multiple dual credit and Advanced Placement courses.

Pickens will receive a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant and a certificate from the Mayor’s Office. The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes local natives, residents or former residents.
