High Street in Logansport will benefit from state grant

For the third time in four years, the City of Logansport has been awarded state funding from the Community Crossings program for street paving.

This week, the city received word it will receive $727,000 in funding for the pavement of High Street from Third Street to 24th Street. State funding for the project will be matched by the Logansport City Council.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said the cooperation of Street Commissioner Tony Shanks, Deputy Mayor Mercedes Brugh along with Ross Anderson from the clerk-treasurer’s office was vital to the award, as was consultant Jodi Coblentz of DLZ. Earlier in her career, she served as the Cass County highway engineer is the only woman ever to serve in the capacity.

“Since the Community Crossings program began, our administration has been fortunate to work with DLZ in secure $2.3 million in additional state money to upgrade the quality of our city streets,” Kitchell said. “Overall, it stretches our paving budget, and that has been a plus for one of our local businesses, Central Paving.”

Kitchell said Shanks has looked forward to this project for a number of years.

“We could not do this type of project without the cooperation of the Logansport City Council,” Kitchell said. “Improving our infrastructure has been one of this council’s crowning achievements and top priorities. Given the distance of High Street, this is a huge plus for our community. Had we not received a grant or bonded to do High Street, we would probably be facing a multi-year commitment to do almost two miles of High in phases.”

The city received the maximum $1 million from the program in 2016 and more than $560,000 in 2017, but did not receive funding last year.

“In comparison with many other cities our size, what we’ve seen is that we’ve received higher awards in part because our streets really needed to be repaired,” Kitchell said. “We’re fortunate to have an ongoing commitment from everyone who needs to participate to improve our streets.”
