More streetlighting coming to Heartland

Logansport Redevelopment Commission members have approved an appropriation that will extend a lighted welcome mat into the city.

The commission appropriated Tax Increment Financing (TIF) dollars from the Gateway TIF District for the installation of streetlights from the East Main Street intersection with 18th Street south to U.S. 24/U.S. 35, better known as the Hoosier Heartland.

Nearly $70,000 will be spent to install electric lines and LED fixtures to improve safety along a dark stretch of highway at the southern edge of the city.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said the expenditure is timely given the recent purchase of land for a proposed gas station at 18th Street and the Heartland.

“We want to make this a more inviting entrance into our city, and with the recent opening of the 18th Street Bridge and the new lighting on it, additional lighting will make it safer for everyone who uses one of the busiest streets or roads we have in Cass County,” Kitchell said.

The mayor said further lighting is needed for westbound traffic on the Heartland that exits onto East Main Street.
