On the football field, one former local player was known for his booming kicks.
Now, he’ll be getting his kicks – literally and figuratively – playing professional soccer.
Mario Perez, who signed earlier this month to play for the Indy 11, is this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.
As reported in the Pharos-Tribune, Perez signed a USL Academy contract before this season begins. Martin Rennie, Indy’s coach, said Perez “has trained with our team since last season and has shown significant improvement.”
The 19-year-old was a goalkeeper for Indiana Fire Academy from 2015 through this year. He is a student at Purdue-Fort Wayne and plays for the Mastodons.
“It’s not every day that Logansport produces a professional athlete, and that’s a significant accomplishment whatever sport it is,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said Monday.
Mario will receive a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant and a certificate from the Mayor’s Office. The program honors local residents, natives or former residents for their achievements.
