Logansport receives interest from two housing firms

This may be the last summer crops will be growing in farm fields from the intersection of Yorktown and High Street roads on the city’s east end.

A steering committee assembled by the city to address the local housing shortage learned Tuesday two housing developers have responded to a request for qualifications to develop approximately 20 acres the city owns.

Both firms will make presentations in a public meeting at 11a.m. April 23 in the city council chambers. One of the firms, Crestline, developed apartments in the former McKinley Elementary School building on the north side and is currently developing single-family homes on 30 lots throughout the city. The other, Biggs, is a Fort Wayne developer which has previously worked with the city’s housing consultant, HPG Network.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said people who have questions about the development or the firms are invited to attend, along with Realtors, banking officials and contractors interested in performing construction work as well as sub-contractors.

“Our goal is to involve as much of the local economy as we can in this project,” Kitchell said. “We want the neighbors and surrounding property owners to be aware of the efforts being made to meet housing demand in our community and to leverage the property the city owns in that area to make this area part of the solution to our housing needs.”

A housing market study performed for the city last year determined the city-owned land at High Street and Yorktown was the most suitable initial site for housing development. The former Tipton Elementary School site and downtown buildings were recommended as the second and third choices for new housing development. The study called for up to 400 new housing units in the city based on need in the city and nearby counties.
