Bill to address the detection of underground utility lines passes Senate

Last Updated on February 24, 2020 by State Senator Stacey Donato

STATEHOUSE — A bill sponsored by State Sen. Stacey Donato (R-Logansport) that would address the detection of underground utility lines unanimously passed the Senate today.

House Bill 1218 would amend the state’s current “Call Before You Dig” law to require utility operators who bury their service to use materials capable of being detected from above ground.

“HB 1218 protects our investments in underground utilities,” Donato said. “As utility operators begin to replace aging lines, the state wants to make certain that all new lines buried underground are detectable in an effort to prevent any future damage or outage.”

HB 1218 will now move back to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
