High heat expected, severe storms possible across Indiana

The National Weather Service is predicting heat Index Values Near 100 Degrees today (6/18).

High temperatures will climb into the mid 90s this afternoon with dew point temperatures around 70. The combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like nearly 100 degrees this afternoon.

If you have outdoor activities planned for today, be sure to take precautions to guard against heat related illness. Drink plenty of water, wear light weight light colored clothing, and take frequent breaks in an air conditioned environment when possible.

Conditions across the region will likely become favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop — capable of producing damaging wind, large hail, a few tornadoes, and localized flooding.

The forecast from the National Weather Service is calling for:

Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy and hot, with a high near 94. Heat index values as high as 99. Southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 a.m, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 a.m. Low around 69. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8 a.m. High near 88. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 67. Southwest wind around 10 mph.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89.

Sunday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.
