THE JUNCTION AT LOGANSPORT

Demolition of the former Logansport Mall continues to make way for development of a new retail center known as The Junction. Planet Fitness opened on the northwest corner of the property in March 2021 and a Home 2 Suites hotel is planned for the eastern portion of the property that was formerly occupied by JCPenney. More information is available here.

Preparations are underway for construction of the Home2Suites by Hilton on the former JCPenney Site.

MELBOURNE AVENUE WET WEATHER PROJECT

Melbourne Avenue in Logansport has been under construction since February 2019, but the projected completion date for the multi-million dollar stormwater project is October 2021.

This project involved stacking two 10-foot diameter pipes under the roadway along Melbourne Avenue, from Eel River Avenue, east to 5th Street and constructing a pump station at 1st and Melbourne.

The project is part of a federal requirement to reduce overflows of wastewater into the rivers during heavy rainfall. The pipes will store water during heavy rains, then gradually release the water back to LMU’s sewage collection system to be treated at LMU’s wastewater plant.

The gateway arch from Little Turtle Waterway will be relocated to 4th Street, north of The Depot, and Fourth Street will be closed at the alley between Market and Melbourne. That project is expected to begin soon.

The gateway arch at Little Turtle Waterway was taken down in December 2020, when this picture was taken, as part of LMU’s Melbourne Avenue stormwater project. It will soon be moved to 4th Street, north of The Depot.

CASS COUNTY JAIL

A 47,000 square foot expansion of the Cass County Jail is underway on High Street, between 3rd and 4th Streets in downtown Logansport. The two-story addition will allow for an additional 154 beds, bringing the total number of beds to 362.

WATER / COAL PLANT DEMOLITION

Logansport Municipal Utilities is in the process of demolishing the former water plant and coal-powered electric generating plant along the Eel River.

The power plant generated electricity from 1895 to 2016. LMU now distributes electricity from NextEra Energy, Inc. after it was deemed too inefficient and costly to continue producing electricity. In 1914, water was provided to the Logansport community with a filter plant built next to the electric generating plant. The system was improved in 1954 when the water treatment plant was built. This plant treated water from the Eel River. It was decommissioned in late 2013 due to the plant being outdated. The city’s water is now provided from a well field distribution system.

Along with the two facilities, the coal conveyor running across the Eel River, the defunct water tower, and former coal building on the north side of the river will also be demolished.
