Little Turtle Waterway’s gateway arch moved to Fourth Street

The gateway arch that previously stood on the south side of Melbourne Avenue has been relocated to Fourth Street and now stands in front of The Depot.

The arch was taken down during the Melbourne Avenue stormwater project and could not be put back in the same place or moved any farther south due to the railroad tracks.

In January, concepts for an expanded greenspace on the north side of Melbourne Avenue were presented and the decision was made to move the gateway arch / signal bridge to the north side of the Depot.

Fourth Street remains closed to traffic south of the alley.

The 32-foot gateway arch is a railroad signal bridge that was originally located on the west side of Logansport near Cole Hardwood. Little Turtle Waterway Plaza was completed in 1998 and was named “Best New Park” at the 2003 Great Parks/Great Cities conference in New York City, according to designer Rundell Ernstberger Associates, LLC.
