When news of the tragic death of Logansport’s Cpl. Humberto Sanchez reached the community last August, there were many who desperately wanted to do something. As time passed and more details were shared, the family contacted Priceless Banners and the Cass County Community Foundation to start a scholarship fund to remember Humberto each year and the sacrifice he and his family have made.
Deanna Crispen, President & CEO of CCCF shared that since August, gifts to the Cpl. Humberto Sanchez Scholarship Fund have continued to come in each week. She said, “ we are still receiving donations, and many are accompanied by heartfelt notes to the family. One recent note was simply signed a “combat veteran” with the words, “May Humberto’s sacrifice never be forgotten.”
The fund has reached over $49,000 and today, Dave Price, of Priceless Banners made a special presentation. Price’s business, Priceless Banners has been selling t-shirts, yard signs and banners since summer with proceeds collected for the scholarship fund. During a press conference today with the Sanchez family present, Price presented a check for $12,000 to the Community Foundation to be added to the scholarship fund.
Crispen then shared, “The CCCF Board of Directors also wish to honor the sacrifice and courage of Cpl. Sanchez and are going to match the Price donation with $12,000 additional dollars. The two gifts today will endow the fund at over $73,000. The scholarship criteria have not yet been established but it is hoped to be awarded the first time in May of 2022.
In 2021, CCCF awarded 135 scholarships totaling over $474,650. For more information on this scholarship or how to establish your own scholarship, please call the Cass County Community Foundation at 574-722-2200.
