Single vehicle crash kills one

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at approximately 11:14 p.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received a call of a single vehicle rash on South East River Road near County Road 325 East. Deputies responded to the crash along with the Walton Fire Department, Cass County Fire District #1, Indiana State Police and Cass County Emergency Medical Services. Initial scene assessment found a pickup truck had travelled off the roadway, struck a tree and overturned.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Michael Thomison found a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck had driven of the north side of the roadway and struck a tree before rolling over.

The driver and registered owner of the Chevrolet, Oliver Crain, 24, of Logansport, IN, had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel before he was transported by Cass County Emergency Medical Services to the helipad at Logansport Memorial Hospital to meet with an air ambulance for transport to a trauma center. Mr. Crain was pronounced deceased before the medical flight. A passenger in the pickup, Bryant Landis, 21, of Logansport, refused medical treatment at the scene. Seatbelts were not utilized by either the driver or the passenger in this crash.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident.
