On Friday, August 18, 2023 at approximately 8:14 a.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received calls of a two-vehicle crash on US 24 at the intersection of County Road 600 East. Deputy Chris Jones responded to the crash along with several other public safety agencies and deputies. The responding agencies included the New Waverly Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, Logansport Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Logansport Police Department, Cas County Emergency Management, Cass County Coroner’s Office and Cass County Emergency Medical Services.
Initial scene assessment found a northbound vehicle on County Road 600 East was struck by a tractor trailer that was traveling westbound on US 24.
Tyana Lindley, 20, of Peru, IN, was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber northbound on County Road 600 East when she crossed the eastbound lanes of US 24 an then entered the westbound lanes of US 24, failing to yield the right of way to a westbound semi-tractor and livestock trailer. Her vehicle was struck by a westbound 2009 Peterbilt semi-tractor rig loaded with live hogs driven by Cole Rush, 19, of Flora. Both vehicles came to a stop northwest of the intersection.
The Cass County Coroner’s Office pronounced Lindley deceased at the scene from her injuries. Rush was examined by medical personnel at the scene but declined medical transport to a hospital.
Impaired driving is not believed to be a factor in this crash. The roadway was closed for approximately 5.5 hours for crash investigation, off-loading hogs from the trailer and removing debris from the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and crash reconstructionists. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 574-753-7800.
