Logansport, IN – The Principal of Logansport High School (LHS), Matt Jones, has announced his decision to begin the transition from the role starting next school year. This announcement comes after the successful completion of Year 153, his 13th class, marked by a memorable graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 in the Berry Bowl.

Reflecting on the decision, after nearly 18 years as an administrator at LHS, Principal Jones felt the time was right including the need to assist with his mother who’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the students, staff, community, and alumni as the principal of LHS, the school from which I graduated. I am proud of what we have accomplished together. Our expansion of programs and facilities has provided LHS students with a personalized four-year experience supported by dedicated and caring staff,” stated Jones.

To ensure a smooth transition, Mr. Michael Miller, a 2004 LHS graduate and current leader at the Logansport Intermediate School, will assume the role of Associate Principal and work alongside Mr. Jones next school year. Mr. Miller will gradually take over some of Mr. Jones’s responsibilities, with Mr. Jones remaining involved to facilitate the transition.

“I am committed to ensuring a seamless handover and will work closely with Mr. Miller and the school community throughout the upcoming school year,” added Principal Jones. “I am grateful for the support of Mrs. Starkey, the School Board, and our entire staff. We have created an environment where students have everything they need to thrive, grow, and find their path to graduation and post-secondary, whether that means enrolling in college, enlisting in the military, or entering the workforce.”

Superintendent Michele Starkey said, “I can’t even begin to share the admiration, gratitude and respect for Matt Jones, and all that he has done for our students, LHS, LCSC and the community. Matt came to LHS at time when the students and staff needed stability, direction and support. He has worked tirelessly to provide all of that in order to ensure that our students have every opportunity possible in order to be successful. Words cannot even begin to describe how thankful I am for all that he has done! I am extremely excited that Michael Miller will be able to work with Matt, side-by-side, to learn the ins and outs of how things work at LHS, so that we can continue to move forward and not skip a beat! Michael is a leader who leads by example, and has shown his commitment to our students, staff, LCSC and community. I have no doubt that he will do an outstanding job as Associate Principal and then as Principal of LHS. We are extremely fortunate to be in the position to actually allow for a transition such as this. Change is never easy, and this is a big one, but this will allow for a smooth transition!”

Principal Jones has the fourth-longest tenure in the school’s rich history, behind JJ Mitchell (23 years), Hugh Leeman (19 years), and JH Mertz (15 years).
