SOURCE: News release from Cass County Sheriff’s Department on January 3, 2025:
On Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, at approximately 12:21 a.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received a call for an unknown vehicle crash. Initial investigation found the call was actually two people being stabbed and not a vehicle crash. The incident ultimately escalated into an officer-involved shooting.
Deputy Bryce Hamilton was the initial responding deputy from Cass County. While retrieving additional medical supplies from his patrol vehicle, he spotted a man later identified as Christopher S. Evans, 35, of Logansport, IN, armed with two knives. Deputy Hamilton gave several commands to Mr. Evans. Evans did not obey the commands and charged at Deputy Hamilton while armed with two knives. Deputy Hamilton retreated into an adjacent field in an effort to get away from Mr. Evans. His efforts were unsuccessful in avoiding Mr. Evans and he ultimately discharged his service weapon striking Mr. Evans.
Despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Evans succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident.
Deputy Bryce Hamilton is a three-and-a-half year veteran of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Hamilton is assigned to road patrol duties. Deputy Hamilton was placed on administrative leave until all reviews of this incident are completed.
Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland has reviewed the body-worn camera footage and Indiana State Police investigation. Mr. McLeland found Deputy Hamilton’s actions appropriate and justified. Mr. McLeland was involved because the incident occurred south of the Cass/Carroll County line in Carroll County.
Agencies assisting with the Indiana State Police investigation were the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Coroner’s Office, Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office, Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Department, Logansport Police Department and Cass County Emergency Medical Services.
No further information is available for release at this time.
