January marks the celebration of National Mentoring Month, and Stand UP Cass County is excited to extend our gratitude to all mentors within our community. The presence of caring adults in young people’s lives is crucial, as highlighted by the 40 Developmental Assets, which emphasize the importance of external assets in keeping youth safe and drug-free.

Research underscores the significant impact mentors have in equipping young people with the skills necessary to make positive choices and avoid negative behaviors. Here are some compelling statistics:

  • 55% of mentored youth are more likely to attend college.
  • 81% are more likely to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities.
  • 78% are more likely to engage in community volunteer work.

Yet, despite these benefits, research indicates that 1 in 3 youth will never experience the guidance of a mentor in their lifetime.

National Mentoring Month offers an opportunity to honor the diverse individuals who play pivotal roles in the lives of young people, including parents, caregivers, volunteers, and organization leaders. We invite you to visit our Facebook page to share the valuable information provided and encourage you to recognize and celebrate mentors in your own unique way.

Nikki Malott shares, “Mentoring youth doesn’t have to be formal. It can be as simple as having conversations with them. Give them a seat at the table. Listen without judgment. Value them and encourage them to achieve their goals. If they say they ‘don’t have’ goals, help them create some! It’s very easy, and Google is a great resource if you’re unsure where to start.”

Join us in making a difference this National Mentoring Month by acknowledging and supporting the mentors who contribute significantly to the growth and success of our youth.

Together, we can ensure that every young person has the opportunity to thrive with the guidance of a mentor.
