On Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at approximately 3:05 p.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received calls for a two-vehicle crash on US 24 at the County Road 600 East intersection. Deputy David Wells, several other public safety agencies, and deputies responded to the crash. The responding agencies included the New Waverly Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Logansport Police Department, and Cass County Emergency Medical Services. Initial scene assessment found a northbound sport utility vehicle on County Road 600 East was struck by a sport utility vehicle traveling westbound on US 24.

Carrie March, 47, of Logansport, IN, was driving a 2009 Ford Escape northbound on County Road 600 East when she crossed the eastbound lanes of US 24 and then entered the westbound lanes of US 24, failing to yield the right of way to a westbound passenger vehicle.

Her vehicle was struck by a westbound 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by Julia McElheny, 39, of Logansport. The Ford came to a stop in the intersection and the Nissan came to a stop northwest of the intersection.

Julia McElheny and a 3-year-old passenger were transported to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette by Cass County Emergency Medical Services. Both received non-life-threatening injuries.

Carrie March received life-threatening injuries in the crash and was flown from the scene to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne via a medical helicopter, where she later died. The March family has been notified.

Impaired driving is not believed to have been a factor in this crash. The roadway was closed for approximately two hours for the crash investigation and debris removal.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstructionist is still investigating the crash. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 574-753-7800.
