On Friday, May 16, 2025, a fast-moving storm with high winds swept through Indiana, moving through
Logansport after 5:30 p.m.
Logansport Utilities quickly responded to multiple power outages, dispatching the electric line distribution on- call crew. Downed trees and branches were some of the primary causes of the outages, leading to four separate substations being forced to “open” (shut off power), resulting in approximately 6,000 customers to go without power in downtown and west Logansport.
One major outage occurred due to a tree falling behind the Logansport Police Station on High Street, resulting in power loss from 8th Street to 26th Street, including the Logansport Utilities field office on Bringhurst Street. A generator was used to power the dispatch room for about an hour and a half until crews were able to restore electricity.
All available linemen, underground crews, tree trimming teams, supervisors, project engineers, and storeroom personnel were deployed, working relentlessly, many for 16 to 24 consecutive hours at multiple locations involving downed trees, wires, transformers, and poles.
By approximately 10:40 p.m. on Friday, power had been restored to the west side of the city, with about 700 customers still without electricity in scattered areas.
A particularly complex repair involved a downed pole and power lines at Michigan Avenue and 6th Street.
Crews isolated the outage to allow for safe repair work, limiting service disruption to just ten residents and one gas station. Linemen Matt Jones and Devon Hood worked non-stop for 12 hours to complete the repairs and install essential components on the complicated installation.
Other downed pole locations included:
- 300 South, west of State Road 29
- 350 South, west of State Road 29
- 200 North, between Indian Creek Road and Royal Center Pike
- 800 block of Van Buren Street
- 650 North and 100 East
Additional downed tree locations included:
- Delaware Road
- 700 West and U.S. 24
On Saturday, May 17, 2025, restoration efforts continued as crews replaced a broken pole and transformer at 650 North and 100 East. By Monday, May 19, fewer than ten customers remained without power, pending private electrician repairs needed on their properties.
“The dedication and perseverance shown by our linemen, supervisors, project engineers, tree crews, and
support staff was nothing short of extraordinary,” said Greg Toth, CEO/Superintendent of Logansport
Utilities. “These teams worked tirelessly – some for over 24 straight hours – through difficult conditions to
restore power to thousands of our customers. Their commitment to safety, service, and our community makes me incredibly proud our workforce, their skills, and their dedication.”
Toth continued to say, “We know being without electricity is never easy, especially during unexpected storms. Our customers patience, support and encouragement meant a great deal to our crews as they worked safely and efficiently to bring power back to our community.”
