Update on May 11, 2025 residential structure fire on US 35 South

On the evening of May 11ᵗʰ, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Walton Community Fire Department were dispatched to the 28xx Block South U.S. 35 for smoke coming from the roof and windows of a residence.

Upon arrival of Walton Engine 2, a single-story residential structure was located with heavy smoke presenting from the rear of the structure. Walton Engine 2 personnel forced entry into the residence and encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions. Walton Engine 2 crews initiated an interior fire attack, working their way towards the rear of the structure. A rapid-fire development event occurred, and all working crews were evacuated from the structure and evacuation tones were alarmed. A personnel accountability report took place, all personnel were accounted for and normal fireground operations were resumed. The fire was marked under control within 8 minutes from Engine 2’s arrival. Two attack lines were deployed to extinguish the fire. Fire personnel remained on scene for approximately two hours performing overhaul to the structure and searching for remaining fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State of Indiana Fire Marshals office. The cause has not been determined at the time of this press release. Any information regarding this fire shall be directed to the Fire Marshal’s Office (1-800-382-4628). No foul play is suspected.
