Alan was deeply involved in Masonic fraternal organizations. In 1964, he became a Master Mason at the Burnettsville Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Royal Center Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

In the 1970s, he was a member of the CB Club, known by his handle “Skipper,” with Gail as “Skipper’s Helper.” When it came to pastimes, Alan especially loved fishing and floating down the river.
