
Two vehicle crash on SR 29 in Cass County claims three lives and seriously injures one

On Sunday, September 21, 2025, at around 5:53 p.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received multiple calls about a two-vehicle rollover crash on State Road 29 at County Road 400 South. Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with the Logansport Police Department, Indiana State Police, Logansport Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, Cass County Fire District #1, Cass County Emergency Medical Services, and the Cass County Coroner’s Office. The initial scene assessment showed that a Nissan Sentra was traveling westbound on County Road 400 South and crossed State Road 29 into the path of a southbound GMC Sierra pickup truck.
Investigation by Deputy Alex Denny revealed that 51-year-old John Stepek of Hammond, IN, was driving a 2015 Nissan Sentra westbound on County Road 400 South when he disregarded a stop sign at State Road 29 and entered the path of a 2020 GMC Sierra pickup truck. John Stepek and his 54-year-old passenger, Jennifer Stepek, had to be extricated by firefighters from the Nissan Sentra. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Nissan Sentra failed to yield to the GMC Sierra. Both vehicles came to rest southwest of the intersection on their driver’s side.
The 2020 GMC Sierra was driven by 79-year-old Michael Wilcox of rural Logansport, IN. 78-year-old Elizabeth Wilcox of rural Logansport, IN, was a front-seat passenger in the pickup truck. Both occupants needed to be extricated by firefighters. Michael Wilcox sustained serious injuries from the crash and was transported to Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis by medical helicopter. Elizabeth Wilcox was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene with substantial damage. The roadway was partially closed for approximately two and a half hours for crash investigation and clean up.
Family members of all fatalities have been notified.
The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Cass County Coroner’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the office at 574-753-7800.
