January 20, 2021: Presidential Inauguration

Today is Inauguration Day and Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States just after noon.

A departure ceremony for President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to begin around 8 a.m. at Joint Base Andrews. President Trump delivered a farewell address by video Tuesday afternoon.

In 1937, Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first U.S. president sworn in in January.

The Constitution established March 4 as Inauguration Day, but the date was moved to January 20 with the passage of the Twentieth Amendment in 1933.

President-elect Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris will take the oaths of office at the U.S. Capitol just after noon.

A wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery is expected to begin after 2 p.m., followed by a Presidential Escort to the White House after 3 p.m.

Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence will travel to Columbus, Indiana and are expected to thank friends and longtime supporters there around 2:45 p.m.

A virtual “Parade Across America” is scheduled to take place at 3:15 p.m. and will feature performances in communities in all 56 states and territories. Indiana will be represented by Culver Academies.

Tom Hanks will host the “Celebrating America” primetime special at 8:30 p.m.

A Virtual Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 21.
