Logansport High School announces 2022 Hall of Distinction Inductee

The 2022 Logansport High School Hall of Distinction Inductee is 1983 graduate, John C. Ely. We look forward to recognizing John at the 151st Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, June 5, at 2:00 p.m. in the Berry Bowl.

John graduated from Taylor University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. While attending Taylor, John thrived in running as he earned eight Collegiate Varsity Letters (four Cross Country/four Track & Field), NAIA All-District 21 Cross Country (1983), National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) All-American Track & Field (1984) and NAIA Second Team All-American Track & Field (1985). John was part of Taylor University’s National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA)
National Championship Team in Track & Field (1985 and 1986).

Upon graduation, John transitioned to a career in law enforcement, where he worked as a state trooper with the Michigan State Police before being promoted to the rank of detective. After serving the state of Michigan, he served nationally and abroad with the United States Secret Service and became a Senior Special Agent. John protected seven United States Presidents- Sitting Presidents: William Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump; Former Presidents: Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush, and numerous foreign Heads of State. John was the lead operations/logistics agent and later team leader for President George H.W. Bush’s detail.

In 2017, John was named the top fraud Investigator in Indiana/Kentucky. The U.S. Department of Justice recognized John with the United States Attorney’s Award for investigative success in 2019. John’s work with the U.S. Secret Service was featured on CNN and Fox News.

Even with all his time dedicated to the United States, running is deep in John’s DNA and his roots back to
Logansport. He has run in 40+ marathons with a personal best time of 2:32:05, including the Boston
Marathon in 1984, 1999, 2009, and 2019. John recently retired as SVP, Chief of Executive Protection/Global Security with Steward Health Care. He developed and supervised Steward’s Global Security Team across Europe and North and South America and led the successful development and management of Steward’s Intelligence, Physical, and Technical Security Programs.

John currently resides in Kennebunkport, Maine, with his wife, Angelica. They have seven children; Justin, Nicholas, Ariel, Jonathan, Hannah, Faith & Logan.
