Logansport Utilities renames wastewater treatment plant
Last Updated on January 23, 2026 by Cass County Communication Network
Logansport Utilities has announced a new name for its wastewater treatment facility, changing it from the “Wastewater Treatment Plant” to the “Water Renewal Center” (WRC).
The updated name better reflects the facility’s modern operations, environmental stewardship, and vital role in protecting public health and local waterways.
While the facility’s operations, staff, and services will remain the same, the new name more accurately describes what happens at the facility, the cleaning and renewing of used water before it is returned to the environment in a safe and sustainable way.
By moving away from outdated terminology, Logansport Utilities hopes to improve public understanding of the essential and often unseen work performed every day at the Water Renewal Center. The change also aligns Logansport with industry best practices nationwide, where many utilities have adopted similar terminology to reflect the evolving nature of wastewater treatment. The WRC has previously been referred to as the “Sewage Treatment Plant” and more recently, as the “Wastewater Treatment Plant” (WWTP). However, the name used on official legal documents will remain unchanged as the “Publicly Owned Treatment Works” (POTW).
The Water Renewal Center reduces pollutants in wastewater to levels that can be safely returned to the environment. Wastewater is used water from homes, businesses, and industry and includes substances such as human waste, food scraps, oils, soaps, and chemicals. This water is carried through miles of pipes to the facility, where proven treatment technologies are used to ensure it meets all state and federal water quality standards while protecting local waterways and public health.
“Today’s wastewater treatment facilities do far more than simply manage sewage,” said CEO/Superintendent Greg Toth. “Our Water Renewal Center uses advanced treatment processes, employs skilled professionals, and follows strict environmental standards to protect the Wabash River and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations. The new name better represents the value and responsibility of the work being done.”
The new name will also serve as a positive tool for recruiting and retaining qualified employees.
“A job title at the Water Renewal Center instead of the ‘wastewater treatment plant’ provides a clearer description of the work being done and appear more attractive to job seekers and college graduates who are focused on sustainability roles.”
Signage, internal and public communications, as well as website and educational materials will be updated over time to reflect the new name. Logansport Utilities remains committed to transparency, innovation, and environmental responsibility while serving the community now and for generations to come.
