Time change is a perfect time to check smoke detectors
Last Updated on March 6, 2026 by Cass County Communication Network
Logansport IN- With the upcoming time change, the Logansport Fire Department would like to remind the community to test their detectors and change batteries as needed. Many newer detectors have a sealed battery with a ten-year life. These detectors should be tested monthly.
All smoke detectors have a life span of not more than ten years. When replacing batteries, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, install alarms in the living room or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.
There are two types of smoke alarms- ionization and photoelectric. An ionization detector is more responsive to flaming fires, while a photoelectric detector is more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of detectors or combination ionizationphotoelectric detectors, also known as dual sensor alarms, are recommended.
If you have any questions about smoke detectors, you can visit the NFPA website at NFPA.org or call the Logansport Fire Department Central Station at 574-753-3102.
If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, Logansport Professional Firefighters, Local 470, will provide them to you free of charge. You can visit Central Station, located at 630 High Street, Logansport, and request a smoke alarm, Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm.
